A friend of mine was employed by the japanese denim manufacturer Evisu. He was working on a new seasons collection with a baseball theme and asked me to do a couple of t-shirt designs. I've always had a thing about baseball mitts and set about the design task by loosing myself in a maze of web-based mittimagery. The catchers mitt (The man who squats behind the batter with a mesh mask on.) is a particularly striking version of the catching glove. I cut out lots of tiny photographs of catchers mitts through the ages and planned to arrange them in the Evisu seagull motif.
Months later, I stumbled across an envelope full of the tiny leather mitts while searching for something equally random. I was struck by their organic forms as I sprinkled them onto a surface. Almost like a seed collectors exotic pod find. I arranged the gloves on a favorite begonia and photographed the scene. The subsequent transparency was then placed in a laminated frame that I wanted to posses with an ambiguous suburban interior feel. Yogi Berra and Johnny Bench were both legendary major league catchers.
